Interior Wood Shutters 101

When a room appears too bland and needs to be redecorated, sometimes all it takes to create an entirely different look is to have interior wood shutters installed. This is a quick, easy and relatively cheap method of changing the look of a room. This is also a practical solution if a room in your house is too bright or too dark. This way the light that enters a room can be regulated.

We have seen the endless potential of wood in household furniture and decorations. Wood shutters can function both as functional furniture and additional room decoration.

Kinds of Shutters

There are many, different kinds of shutters being sold in the markets to choose from:

  • Fixed
  • Motorized
  • Adjustable
  • Decorative

Fixed shutters are easiest to install. The task can be done by homeowners themselves. The panes are fixed in a frame and positioned in permanent angles. They can be nailed permanently over a screened window, or attached on hinges to allow movement for opening and closing. They can be easily mounted by screwing in the hinges where they are needed.

Motorized shutters have electric mechanisms that need to be installed properly into the house’s electrical system. A hand-held control automatically closes them shut or open according to one’s pleasure.

Louvers are examples of adjustable shutters. In some cases a lever closes and opens the panes alone; in another mechanism, the panes are individually attached to the frame with bolts that function like joints. The closing and opening is done by pushing the entire frame up and down.

Decorative shutters best function as room accessories. They easily deteriorate when subjected to frequent moisture and heat. They may be varnished to accent a wall or match the rest of the furniture in the room. They may be made of virgin pine, which is a light-colored wood that rather dents quite easily. The frames may also be hand carved with beautiful patterns. It is better to mount them in areas where they will not get wet.

Other Characteristics

The main function of interior wood shutters is to regulate the flow of air and penetration of sunlight in the room. Accessorizing the area is a secondary function. They can also be used as additional cover for windows, room dividers or even interior doors.

These can be ordered according to the buyer’s design and wood preference. The dimensions and shape may also be dictated beforehand. The prices may range according to several factors like the manufacturer, quality of materials, size and kind.
